Many people in the younger generations probably know this famous made-up secret agent from the 26 movies he has been in, especially the ones in which Daniel Craig has played him over the last 15 years. But of course, Ian Fleming was the one who first wrote about James Bond eBooks. Check Out these E-books.
And the Bond from the books is much better than the one from the movies.
Fleming’s Bond, who he said “was a mixture of all the secret agents and commando types I met during [WWII],” is more human and less like the near-superhero Jason Bourne type. Fleming wrote 12 James Bond books and two collections of short stories during the 1950s and 1960s. He died at age 53.
But a few of the books are much better than the rest. Here are the five best, in order from best to worst. Since each story stands on its own, you can read any of them without having read the others first. This is not the best part, all of these books are available online at legimi.
5 Best James Bond eBooks
1. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
In general, the first seven books in the series about James Bond are the best ones. In these early stories, which were written in the 1950s, the growing shadows of the Cold War add atmosphere. Bond fights directly and indirectly against the agents of SMERSH, which is a fictional version of a real-life Soviet counterintelligence organization with the motto “Death to Spies!”
After Goldfinger, SMERSH is dissolved, and Bond’s enemy for the next three books is Ernst StavroBlofeld and his criminal organization, Spectre, which has nothing to do with politics.
Bond’s fights with this group of international criminals aren’t as exciting as his fights with murderous communists, except for “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”
As we’ll see in some of the other picks on this list, Fleming is at his best when Bond is stuck in a small space where something other than what is shown is going on and he has to figure out what’s going on. Here, those quarters are a Swiss ski resort with a research clinic run by a disguised Blofeld who is supposedly trying to cure a group of pretty farm girls of their allergies.
The plot is one of Fleming’s most ridiculous, but it’s a great page-turner thanks to an exciting ski chase, plenty of Bond’s athleticism and intelligence, a better look at his deeper side, and his only marriage. This is one of the best James Bond ebooks to read.
2. Casino Royale
The book started it all and introduced the world to Commander James Bond, a member of the Royal Naval Reserve and an agent for the British Secret Intelligence Service. Here, we first hear about Bond’s favorite martini, which he calls the “Vesper.” We also learn about his gambling skills and his abilities as a secret agent, which includes ways to tell if someone has been in your room. Bond must beat Le Chiffre in a high-stakes game of baccarat and put him out of business. Le Chiffre is the boss of a trade union that is controlled by SMERSH.
But even when he does, the story isn’t over. There are still two more twists to come as the book goes through what amounts to three acts and several emotional highs and lows. Casino Royal is one of the most famous James Bond ebooks to read.
3. From Russia with Love
The unique way the plot is set up gives this book a lot of its power. Instead of starting with Bond’s point of view, the first ten chapters are about SMERSH and its plan to kill 007 with the help of psychopathic agent Donovan “Red” Grant. When Bond finally shows up in the eleventh chapter, the reader knows that when he’s told to bring back to England a beautiful female corporal from Soviet Army Intelligence who seems to be a defector, he’s falling into a trap. However, the details of that trap and when Bond will figure out the real score are still unknown, which keeps the reader on the edge of their seats. The fact that all of this happens on the romantic and dramatic Orient Express makes the story even more delicious.
In the end, Fleming doesn’t say what will happen to Bond, just like Arthur Conan did in “The Final Problem” with Sherlock. The real-life author was tired and didn’t know if he would write any more Bond books after this one. He got a second wind, and From Russia With Love was only the sixth of 12 books he would write.
4. Dr. No
Dr. No wasn’t the Bond book with the best reviews, and there’s a lot to criticize here: The plot is one of Fleming’s most ridiculous. It’s about an evil genius who plans to take over the world from an underground lair built under an island that works as a guano mine. It’s the kind of setup that gave rise to the Austin Powers parodies. The Bond girl is especially hard to believe. She is an orphan who lives in the wild and dives for shells. Sadomasochism is a theme that has been present in different ways throughout the Bond series, but it is especially strong in this movie.
And yet… it still works. One gets to see Bond as a rough-and-tumble outdoorsman who leaves his suit and cocktails behind to paddle to an island and explore its swamps.
And it’s exciting to find out what the bad guy Dr. No is up to, like why he has Bond locked up in what looks like a luxury spa. One of the best parts of the book is when Dr. No and Bond argue about what power is and why it is important to keep your base safe.
5. Moonraker
The best Bond book by far (and far different than the movie of the same name). Moonraker shows how Bond spends his time at home and work when he’s not on a mission, which only happens every few months (unfortunately, even 007 had to do paperwork sometimes).
In most of Fleming’s books, 007 knows right away who the bad guy is and goes after him all over the world since the Secret Service doesn’t work at home. In Moonraker, on the other hand, Bond stays in England to protect Hugo Drax, a successful businessman and national hero with a mysterious past who seems to be a very good person. Or isn’t it? Bond starts to doubt Drax when he finds out that Drax cheats on cards. Bond has promised to protect the powerful rocket that Drax built, which is supposed to protect England from its enemies.
Again, the fact that Bond is stationed on a missile-building base helps the story, and of all the books in the series, this one is the most like an old-fashioned detective story. As Bond looks for clues and slowly figures out that Drax might not be who he says he is, the tension builds. Even if you know what’s going to happen, it’s still tasty.
